Exploration 9: Brandon Kilgore

Part 1)

My favorite writing piece was from the personal narrative that I wrote about my uncles hardware.

The Hardware Exchange is one of the best examples of a small family owned business in the Delaware area. They offer so many things to their customers, friends, and community that the big box store just can’t do. As a small business they strive to help every single person that walks through the door and treat them like family, because repeat customers help them stay in business and this is what motivates small businesses to have excellent customer service. One thing that struck me as interesting was when Leroy said to me, “Don’t ever retire, find something you love and keep doing it, I know too many people who retire and then die young because there’s nothing to look forward to”. In this way small business owners are very unique and have many great stories and have many life lessons to share, all you have to do is ask. The last thing Leroy said to me was, “Life is beautiful, and remember that every morning when you wake up”.

I am proud of this because this I learned so much from this project and I feel it came out in my writing. I learned so many new things about my family and learned the history of the  hardware I have been going to since I was a child.

Part 2)
An organization that I feel is important and that is worth looking into is the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). They are all about protecting the rights of riders and racers. They help create new laws that improve safety on the road so not as many motorcyclist get hurt from distracted drivers. The AMA also sanctions all of the racing in the U.S. like Superbike, Motocross, Supercross, GNCC, Hare scrambles, Hill Climb racing, Amateur Mx Nationals, and man other two wheel racing events. The AMA is more than an organization its a club of people who love motorcycles an everything to do with them. I am very passionate Motocross racer and the AMA has been around for a long time creating and running events for people like me who live and breathe racing.

  1. Your story truly hit home. My uncle passed away abruptly in the middle of the night when I was in middle school. He told me a similar saying as Leroy told you in your story. Live every day to the best because you never know which day was your last. Really made my day man. Cheers!

  2. Hey. This piece was awesome. I love the part that your uncle said about life. "Don’t ever retire, find something you love and keep doing it, I know too many people who retire and then die young because there’s nothing to look forward to”. I feel like that is so true. That is something my uncle has told me over the years. The same thing happened to his brother, who quit working too early, and his health began deteriorating when he was still young for his age.

  3. I think that it is good that there is an organization that helps make sure that the riders are safe when they are riding. I think that it helps to show that the sport is good and works towards making the sport inviting for people to come in and join.

  4. I love the part where your uncle said his view on life, which was that you should never retire and keep doing something you love. That really hit home with me because that's exactly what I believe people should do in life instead of picking things that won't make them HAPPY. Which then he proceeds to say that he knew too many people who retired and died young because they had nothing to live for, essentially.
