Exploration Four - Lorenzo Palma

Part One:

What really surprised me while doing research on the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, I found that in 2006, Google actually agreed to censor their site to abolish all public evidence regarding Tiananmen Square and the events that happened in 1989. Google did not present the information on their websites until 2010 when they decided that it was wrong to hide that information from the public. What we need to learn from this is that, as boring and useless we think history is, it's very important to learn it so that we don't make the same mistake in the future. But when China (Google) hid that history from the public, it would've been a lot more likely to see events like that happening again.

Part Two:

This image shows the extent of the people who fight for their own rights will go in order to at least get a chance to make a change in their country for the good of the people. These people are living in, what basically would be a very similar situation as anyone would be in, living in the slums. With blankets for roofs and beds and nothing else but the clothes on their backs.

This image also shows the brutality and the physical pain that protestors go through in order to put out a message and make a difference in their country. The students are wearing body suits and donning umbrellas because they are constantly sprayed with pepper spray so they are trying to protect themselves for the sake of the mission towards democracy in Hong Kong.

Exploration 4: Hans Hartle

Part 1:

The most important thing to remember and learn from the Tiananmen Square protest is how strong China's government has become. Although the Chinese government try to portray their country as a peaceful, prosperous place to live where the government is fair to all, if you try to act out what we as Americans see as a freedom, their government will punish you. Protest to us may be considered as annoying, but our protected under our freedom of speech and assembly, while in China, these are seen as a threat to their dominance. The Chinese government enjoys Communism due to the fact it favors them, they live prosperous at the pain of their people. In the end, even if you pull of a successful protest, the government can flex larger than the people showing off their military dominance.

Part 2:

This picture demonstrates the vast numbers of protestors in Tiananmen Square in June of 1989. Although they had strength in numbers, they were no match for China's military.









 This picture shows Hong Kong's protest which looks eerily similar to the Tiananmen Square protest over 2 decades ago. The people here use their phones to record every event that goes on so that it will not be erased from history.

Exploration 4

The thing at struck most important to me about the Tienanmen square protest 1989 was the brutal force the government used to disperse the crowd. I was surprised because instead of using nonlethal force like tear gas and water the government used lethal force killing more than 500 and wounding more than a thousand.

 

This is an image of the 2014 Hong kong protest. There are thousands of students/protestors gathered in the square. They are all shining their phone lights showing a sign of strength and unity. It also shows the medium through the protestors communicate and coordinate their activities which is their cell phones.

Exploration 4: Lilyan Eldadah

Part One: The thing that struck me the as the most important to remember and lard about the Tiananmen Square protest of 1989 was the cruel punishments that were given to civilians, when the things they did weren't even that bad. For instance journalist Yu Dongyue went to prison for seventeen years for throwing paint at a portrait of Mao Zedong. I just don't understand how the government or person in charge could think of putting someone in jail with murderers and criminals, because he threw paint at a portrait. That punishment, along with many others given to other civilians, is harsh and unusual, and I think that this is important to understand to know how bad the Tiananmen Square protests.

Part Two:

This picture displays the dead bodies entangled in the bicycles by Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989. I found this picture really effective because it helps people see how gruesome and terrible the massacre really was. There were bodies just laying around and it's not like those children on their bikes were doing anything harmful, but they were killed and left to rot in the streets for family and friends to see. I find this really disgusting because there was no humanity in the people who did this to the young children, and it really helped me understand how cruel the massacre was in Tiananmen Square.

This picture displays the student-led boycotts against China's violation of political will on Hong Kong's authority. Students, along with many others, were mad about China's decision to allow only Beijing people to run for Hong Kong's top civil position as chief executive. I found this photo effective because it helps people understand that this issue is personal to many people who felt that what China was doing was wrong. It also helps portray how strong-willed the students are, who are risking their lives to make sure justice is maintained.

Exploration 4 Dillon Quigley

What is known as the June Fourth incident, it is unknown how many people died. The hard facts haven't left china but the range is from a few hundred people to a few thousand people. It is extremely interesting how such facts can be kept inside the country without leaking into the rest of the world. It shows how powerful the government is and how they can control information.

The power of the people, or so they thought.
this picture shows that the people really do want a say. They are packed into a little area so tightly all for a cause they believe in.

The amount of suffering these students are willing to go threw to stand up for what they believe is  mind blowing. It shows that the Chinese government is really trying to put a stop to the protests.

Exploration 4: Jorden Greene

This picture really shows the determination of the protesters from Tienanmen Square. The picture literally shows the bloodshed and the strength of the protesters.

After reading about the event of Tienanmen Square in 1989 I felt that the most important thing to remember is that you should always remember your history. The Chinese Government refuses to allow people to speak about the events of 1989 thus making it impossible for the kids today to know the inevitable outcome. 

This is another very powerful image of the current protesters. The sign is true, they can't kill them all but they can sure try. Today's protesters don't know the magnitude of the governments power over in China.

Exploration 4 - Andrew Balsiger

     One thing that stood out to me when researching about the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 was that about a decade before them there was also a protest where peopl gathered in the Tiananmen Square  and the government used force to clear it out and about 60 people were secretly beheaded. This just shows that the Chinese government is not afraid to use lethal force in order to maintain there rule over China.



This picture was taken days after the government broke up the protests in Tiananmen Square. This stood out because even though the protests in the square were completely crushed the Chinese government left the tanks in the square to make a statement to the Chinese citizens.




This image was taken back in May in Hong Kong and it shows how dedicated the protesters really are. They are basically saying they will sacrifice their lives to make sure Hong Kong gets its democracy.
